Set in the heart of the Cairngorms national park, the spectacular scenery, rugged mountains and abundance of wildlife make Braemar a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

Outdoor Activities

WALK
Braemar is an ideal base for walking. Munro baggers are spoilt for choice with access to more than 40 mountains over 3,000 feet. Or just stroll out from the front door to take in the heather-filled vistas, explore the local birkwoods or meander by the River Dee.

MOUNTAIN BIKE
The mountains and glens around Braemar are criss-crossed with tracks and trails that are ideal for self-guided mountain biking. Bike hire is available in the village.

GOLF
Braemar is home to the highest 18-hole golf course in the country with spectacular scenery and views up and down the glen. Grab a bite at the public bar in the clubhouse.

SKI & SNOWBOARD
Glenshee ski area is just 15 minutes up the road. Known as Scotland’s three valleys, it offers extensive skiing and snowboarding, an excellent café and chairlift rides for summer sightseeing.

THE BRAEMAR GATHERING
The renowned Braemar Gathering, attended by the Royal family, offers something for everyone: caber tossing, tug-of-war, Highland dancing and massed pipe bands. Thousands flock to witness the spectacle in September every year. Learn about the history at the Highland Games Centre.

CASTLES & CULTURE
Visit Braemar Castle, ramble around the ruins of Kindrochit Castle or join a historical walking tour of the village. Balmoral Castle and the Royal Lochnagar distillery are close by. Braemar also hosts regular pipe bands, concerts, exhibitions and events.

NATURAL BEAUTY
A few miles’ drive along the beautiful River Dee will take you to the spectacular natural gorges of the Linn o’ Dee and Linn o’ Quoich with crashing waterfalls and the ‘punch bowl’ rock feature that legend has it was filled with whisky to toast the Jacobite cause in 1715.

EAT & DRINK
Braemar has a great selection of pubs, cafés and restaurants including the renowned Fife Arms Hotel. Sample local culinary delights, pop in for a pint or try a nip of The Balvenie whisky that the cottage shares its name with.
